In a smooth move by Philadelphia, a top tier wide receiver was acquired, which can only mean good things for the franchise’s future.

Philadelphia Eagles land AJ Brown

On Thursday night the Eagles were on the hunt for a wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft and by the end of the night they got exactly that and more, except it wasn’t an incoming rookie. Indeed, after selecting Georgia’s defensive tackle Jordan Davis as the No. 13 overall pick, Philadelphia opted to traded out of its other Round 1 selection. What did they do with it? According to reports, they offered their No. 18 pick to the Titans as part of a head turning package deal that saw A.J. Brown move in the opposite direction. What’s more is that the Eagles have already wrapped up the Pro Bowler’s contract, reportedly signing him to a four year $100 million extension with $57 million guaranteed. The Titans for their part decided to use their new acquired No. 18 pick on Treylon Burks from Arkansas, as they went on the hunt for Brown’s replacement.

Who is AJ Brown?

Having been selected in the second round by the Titans three years ago, Brown came into the NFL flying relatively low under the radar. That would soon change, however, as the wide receiver quickly became one of the highest rated pass catchers in the league, with 2,995 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns since 2019. Brown of course was one of a group of high profile WRs who recently refused to join voluntary workouts with their respective teams as they tried to force negotiations on long term contracts.

Interestingly, the Titans maintained a public position that suggested Brown’s future would be with the franchise, but on the other side Brown himself did not deny that a trade was a potential option having apparently not been satisfied with contract negotiations. The 24 year old now becomes one of the NFL’s highest-paid receivers with the Eagles. Brown’s contract will average $25 million per year, which means there are only three other players - Tyreek Hill at $30 million, Davante Adams with $28 million and DeAndre Hopkins on $27.25 million - who will be making more per season.

Is the AJ Brown deal good for the Titans?

While he did miss four games through injury during the 2021 campaign, the now ex-Titans star will be natural fit alongside the Eagles current star and 2021 first round pick DeVonta Smith. To add further fuel to the fire in Philadelphia, the Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts is known to be a close friend of A.J. Brown. Indeed, the two were recently known to be working out together which is to say putting them together means two things. Firstly, the cohesion between the pair can only good for the team and secondly, it’s a direct indication of the franchise’s willingness to build a team around Hurts as they prepare for the coming season. The future looks bright in Philly.
