The hero insect that ‘helped’ Aiyuk’s stunning 49ers catch
After a dominant first half from the Detroit Lions, a return to the Super Bowl seemed lost for Brandon Aiyuk and the Niners, but all was not lost.
Christian McCaffrey’s 90-yard, two-touchdown performance, including a game-tying score, fueled the 49ers’ comeback against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game. San Francisco secured a 34-31 victory, earning a spot in Super Bowl LVIII against Kansas City, but there were so many smaller stories to emerge in the fallout to this historic win.
49ers tranquilize Lions in second half
Despite a challenging start, the 49ers, led by coach Kyle Shanahan, rallied in the second half with five consecutive scores. The pivotal moment came with Jake Moody’s 33-yard field goal, securing a 27-24 lead. Elijah Mitchell’s 3-yard touchdown and a late penalty on Detroit’s onside kick attempt sealed the win. Quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Jared Goff showcased their skills, while Brandon Aiyuk’s 51-yard reception set up a crucial touchdown.
And behind that Aiyuk catch lies a tiny little winged hero.
Aiyuk’s lucky ladybug
According to the wide receiver, there was a reason behind the “lucky” bounce off Kindle Vildor’s facemask that landed perfectly in Aiyuk’s hands, which then led to the touchdown that sparked an incredible comeback that will live long in the memory.
“Before the game, a ladybug landed on my shoe,” Aiyuk revealed to those listening. “And y’all know what that means.
“That’s all I can say, cause other than that, I don’t know. Just great luck. God was with us today. Great win, bang bang Niner gang.”
So, it’ll be interesting to see if Aiyuk and his offensive teammates will be spraying the appropriate pollen on their clothing to attract more ladybugs as they go into the decisive clash on 11 February against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs? And watch out Sourdough Sam... maybe a new mascot is in town.
