The Miami Dolphins offered Odell Beckham Jr. a contract. Why didn’t he sign?
The out-of-work pass catcher met with the Dolphins and things went well enough that an offer was made. So, why didn’t OBJ sign a contract?
In our previous report, we covered the fact that the Super Bowl-winning wide receiver was due to have a visit with the Miami Dolphins. Indeed, the prospect of such a prolific player joining arguably the most potent offense in the NFL was enough to turn heads. In the end, it seems nothing came of it. Why?
Dolphins made an offer to OBJ
According to reports, Odell Beckham Jr’s visit with the Miami Dolphins last week ended with a contract offer, but the 31-year-old declined to put pen to paper. Speaking during the NFL’s league meetings in Orlando, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel explained that the franchise did in fact make an offer to OBJ though nothing had been finalized which is to say the possibility that Beckham joins, is still on the table.
“Things went great with him,” McDaniel said. “We did make him an offer, and business takes time, especially with players such as Odell, who’s had a phenomenal career, still has really good football in front of him and has options. So, I think those conversations will be ongoing. We’ll see where they go.”
Beckham is of course coming off a one-year, $15 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens. During his time in Baltimore, he caught 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns. Truthfully, it remains to be seen whether Beckham can reclaim the kind of form that saw him exceed 50 catches or 1000 yards back in 2019. Yet, he continues to be one of the most talked about wide receivers in the game, a notion helped by his two catches and one touchdown in the 2021 Super Bowl victory for the Los Angeles Rams. So, how does such a player fit into a team that already boasts the likes of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle? Worst case scenario, he provides valuable experience which can only be of benefit to two young albeit talented receivers. Best case, we see the OBJ of old. Not a bad deal for the Dolphins when you think about it.
