Pittsburgh Steelers’ plan B if they fail to land Aaron Rodgers
The veteran quarterback has still to decide the next chapter of his career with the 41-year-old linked with Pittsburgh.
Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t defined his future for the 2025-26 NFL season and, for now the Pittsburgh Steelers are still top of the list as his next potential destination. However, the spectre of the player’s possible retirement has also arisen in recent weeks.
Rodgers remains in talks with the Steelers, and the player even visited the franchise’s facilities during the last free agency with team owner Art Rooney II stating during the NFL draft that he expected a response from Rodgers.
The Steelers’ roster currently features three quarterbacks: Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and rookie Will Howard; but they hope to sign an experienced quarterback who can help the team as the new NFL season looms on the horizon.
Steelers looking at alternatives
It’s clear that the Pittsburgh franchise won’t wait forever, and now there’s been talk of the Steelers in securing the services of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who was with the Atlanta Falcons last season; this is, of course, if they don’t reach an agreement with Aaron Rodgers.
Kirk Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons last season that included a no-trade clause; he was benched late last season after going 7-7 with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
Rumors about Cousins leaving the Falcons arose from the latent possibility that Michael Penix Jr. would be designated as the starter, but for Cousins’ departure to be finalized there would have to be an interested party who can pay the 37.5 million guaranteed over the next two seasons.
