These are the main candidates to replace Jerod Mayo as the Patriots head coach for 2025
Mayo is already on his way out: here’s who is in line to replace him.
The whirlpool keeps spinning with the New England Patriots in the middle, and this time it’s Jerod Mayo who has been sacrificed in an effort to keep them afloat.
The replacement for Bill Belichick has gone after just one year, proving that even the top teams can wobble and tumble; the search is now on to find the successor to the successor. Patriots CEO Robert Kraft said that firing Mayo was “one of the hardest decisions” he’d ever made, but it was one that, with a 4-13 record, had to be done.
But who is in line to take over from Jarod Mayo, the man who simply couldn’t fill the giant shoes of the NFL legend? Let’s take a look...
Mike Vrabel
We’ll start with the obvious answer first: Mike Vrabel. The coach does, on paper, share a lot of tactical aspects with the outgoing Mayo, but what’s a huge plus on his record is longevity in the game. A 54-45 record over six seasons with the Titans, leading them to the AFC’s No. 1 seed in 2021 is a huge plus on his resumé, and at this point he is the favourite for the role for many fans and pundits alike.
Brian Flores
The Minnesota Vikings' Defensive coordinator is another name being thrown into the ring for a shot at the Patriots job. Flores is another head coaching candidate who has close ties to the Patriots: before taking the Dolphins to a 24-25 record over three seasons, the 43-year-old spent 11 years in New England as a defensive assistant, creating a strong bond with the side. While his offensive talents as a coach have been questioned, he is still firmly in the running.
Pete Carroll
Another name that will have fans flicking through the history books, Carroll was at the Patriots even before Belichick, coaching the Patriots for three years. Highly thought of at the franchise, Carroll would be a comfortable decision: sitting at 170-120-1 in his career numbers, with a 27-21 Patriots record, the 73-year-old is certainly a proven player at the elite level.
Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys head coach has not had the best season, and that’s being kind. Despite this, he is still a proven voice at the top and an elite coach with a huge catalogue of positive results behind him. There is also a doubt surrounding his future in Dallas as things stand, with his contract is set to expire on January 14.
