This is Trey Lance, the Cowboys’ starting QB for week 18 against the Commanders: Career stats, salary, contract...

With Dak Prescott out for the season and Dallas out of the playoff picture, it could be a good opportunity to see what Lance is made of. The young QB could get the start Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys’ backup quarterback Trey Lance is in the second-to-last year of his rookie contract. The QB originally signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021.

One of five quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2021 Draft, he signed a four-year rookie contract on July 28, 2021.

Trey Lance’s rookie millions

The contract guarantees him $34.1 million, including a hefty $22.16 million signing bonus. His base salary in his first year when he was behind QB1 Jimmy Garoppolo was $660,000, rising to $2,210,240 in 2022 despite playing just two games after fracturing his ankle in the Week 2 against the Seahawks.

For the 2024 season, Lance’s earnings break down into a $1.05 million base salary and a $4.26 million roster bonus, contributing to a cap hit of $5.31 million for Dallas.

In a key offseason decision, the Cowboys chose not to pick up Lance’s fifth-year option, which would have cost the team $22.4 million in 2025. This paves the way for Lance to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024 season, granting him the opportunity to negotiate with other teams or possibly return to Dallas under a new deal.

Prescott out, Lance vs Rush

Lance’s journey with the Cowboys began in August 2023 when he was traded from the 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Since then, his role has primarily been as a backup quarterback.

Following Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury, Lance briefly saw action during a lopsided loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, where his appearance was overshadowed by a $22,511 fine for a helmet-to-helmet hit on safety Reed Blankenship.

In the 34-6 defeat to the Eagles, Lance completed four passes for 21 yards and thrown one interception. However, he has remained in a reserve role behind Cooper Rush, who has been dealing with a neck injury.

With the Cowboys out of the playoffs, most pundits are calling for Lance to get the start on Sunday, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
