This two word summary from Dak Prescott perfectly encapsulates the Cowboys’ season

Update:

The chuckle that accompanied Dak Prescott’s childlike smirk under his childish bobble hat, as though he had just secretly thrown a snowball at a teacher, told just as much of a story as his chosen summary of the season.

Oh shit‚” he said as he crunched down on the unsuspecting yet surprisingly bouncy chair which whined at his 238 lbs frame making the springs do their heaviest work of the new year. “That’s a good sound clip for the season,” came the next line, smirk still on show.

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their 2025 NFL season not with a flourish but with an all-too-familiar sense of “what might have been” as they suffered a numbing 34-17 loss to the New York Giants in Week 18 which brought a disappointing conclusion to a year that had offered hope at the start but ultimately trailed off into inconsistency.

Dak Prescott absolves himself of blame

The side finished up with a 7–9–1 record, extending the current playoff drought and leaving fans and analysts alike looking for an exit to the house of mirrors.

When asked about the problems, while not addressing them directly, Prescott absolved himself completely and appeared to pin the blame on the defence: “It’s one of the first seasons — if not the first of my career — I can’t directly correlate my play to the wins or losses, or the end of the season, or overall success of the season," he said.

So that makes it frustrating. We have one of the best offences in the league, explosive. Now, sure, not always to our standard. We didn’t play like that every week, week in and week out, but put up a lot of points. Unfortunately, just didn’t win all the games that we should have,” he concluded.

Individually, Prescott’s numbers were strong. He threw for over 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns, clearing 4,000 passing yards again. But football is a team sport, and Dallas discovered once again that yardage alone does not translate to victories. Efforts to move the ball rarely solved deeper issues the team faced on defence and in critical situational play.

On his fitness, he admitted that he was “very thankful” to have played in every game in 2025.

“When you don’t get to play this game, especially when you talk about how much love and joy and peace this game brings me, when it gets taken away it’s tough. When you put everything in it to come back and play your best, and feel like you’ve done that but you don’t get what you want, it’s a tough feeling. Just super, super thankful to be walking out of this season healthy.”
