Tom Brady breaks his own 40-yard dash time from 2000 NFL Combine. What did he run?
Though he may be retired, it appears the seven-time Super Bowl winner can still move. Indeed, the former QB actually beat the time set by his younger self.
Queue the wine references. Tom Brady is getting better with age or at least that’s what he’d have us believe. In a surprise move with the NFL’s Scouting Combine currently underway, the people’s vote for GOAT showed us all that retirement hasn’t taken his edge off.
Tom Brady beats his Combine time from 2000
If it wasn’t clear that at 46 years old Tom Brady is still keeping himself in shape, then it definitely ought to be now. What’s more, is that it appears the legendary signal-caller is actually in better condition now than when he was playing in the NFL. Clocking in at 5:18 and 5:12 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Brady bested his time of 5:28 which he ran at the 2000 NFL Combine. Yet, you don’t have to take our word for it as you can see the side-by-side video here or take a look at the video that Brady himself posted below:
Who could have guessed what Tom Brady would do?
What’s interesting in all of this is the absolute irony. Remember, Brady’s 40-time back then was one of the factors that contributed to him not being selected until the Patriots picked him up with the 199th overall pick. Few could have expected what was to come. From that humble start, he would go on to secure a roster spot in New England before taking on the starting role after Drew Bledsoe was hit with an injury in Week 2 of the 2001 season.
As they say, there was no looking back. Brady would not only lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl that season, but he’d deliver five more of them before it was all over. Of course, he didn’t stop there either as he would later join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with whom he won his seventh Super Bowl in his very first season - an NFL record. Along with the rings, Brady also has five Super Bowl MVP awards as well as three MVPs in the league.
So, before we leave you, we imagine there may be an eyebrow raised about whether this is the real deal. As we mentioned before, there were two stopwatches used such that we got two different times, both of which were quicker than what he was clocked at back in 2000. Now, as we know the internet is a wild place where many things can be doctored to suit a narrative. On the other hand, we do know that Brady has a history of being absolutely obsessed when it comes to his physical condition. Could it be that he’s faster in his 40s than he was in his 20s? While the jury is still out, we’ve got to say that if there is a player likely to pull that off - a small percentage do - it’s probably Tom Brady.
