Travis Kelce’s incredible NFL catch streak ends in Chiefs win over Bengals
Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have been key to Kansas City’s recent success but had trouble linking up on Sunday.
The Kansas City Chiefs recored their second successive win at the start of the 2024 NFL season thanks to Harrison Butker’s last-gasp field goal against the Cincinnati Bengals, which secured a 26-25 triumph at Arrowhead Stadium.
Andy Reid’s side took the victory despite not being on top of their game, as proved by an intriguing statistic involving tight end Travis Kelce and, by consequence, quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
When was the last time Travis Kelce’s recorded fewer than three catches in an NFL game?
As highlighted on social media by KCTV5 anchor Jared Koller, Sunday’s contest ended Kelce’s incredibly long streak of making at least three catches in an NFL game. The 34-year-old recorded just one against the Bengals. Reports that girlfriend Taylor Swift created the Chiefs’ plays for the game are unconfirmed…
Astonishingly, the last time Kelce registered fewer than three catches was all the way back on September 9, 2018, when the Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 38-28 in Mahomes’ second career start.
Since then, the tight end had made at least three in 114 consecutive games, an NFL record. The Chiefs have, of course, reached four Super Bowls in that time, winning three.
After the narrow win on Sunday, Mahomes praised the Bengals for how they had managed to keep him and Kelce quiet, but is sure it won’t take long for the pair to start clicking once again.
“They were doing a great job of having two people for him in pretty much the entire game. They have a plan for how their going to account for Travis, but as the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards. But the leader he is, he’s special. He’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated. And that’s what you need out of your great players”.
