Update:

It’s been four years since Stefon Diggs joined the Buffalo Bills and while he’s now on his way to the Houston Texans, it can’t be denied that within that time he established himself as arguably the best wide receiver that the franchise has ever seen.

The low down on Stefon Diggs’s contract

When you take a look at what the Bills and Texans got on either side of the trade that rocked the NFL a few days ago, one has to say that both came out as winners and so to did the man in the middle, Stefon Diggs. Indeed, the Bills started out by insuring certain teams couldn’t participate in the trade, but in terms of what the move meant, it now leads to a reshaping of the tools that will be available to quarterback Josh Allen going forward, which is not entirely a bad thing. As for the Texans, the trade means the addition of a veteran pass-catcher to what has to be considered one of the most potent groups of young players in the league right now.

Yet, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the whole situation is a small tweak that the Texans made to Diggs’ contract after acquiring him. Indeed, it’s most definitely worth noting that the franchise inserted a clause in his contract that will allow him to become a free agent after this coming season. As Houston acquired Diggs, however, the team did something notable - it adjusted the receiver’s contract to allow him to attain free agency after this season.

According to ESPN, the Texans struck the final three years from Diggs’s contract and essentially merged $3.5 million in guaranteed money on to the approximately $19 million that he was set to receive this season. Of course, this is not to say that Diggs is likely to be heading out of the door after just one season in Texas. No, what’s more probable is that we see Texans placing the franchise tag on the 30-year-old wide receiver in the season that follows, which is to say keep an eye on the negotiations between Diggs and the Texans as 2025 draws closer.
