What did Jets QB Zach Wilson say about the possibility of the team signing a veteran to replace him?

New York’s underfire signal caller was as defiant as ever when questioned about the possibility of seeing position threatened even more. In truth he’ll need that kind of stubborness going forward.

The Jets quarterback saw himself drop down the pecking order following a string of less-than-ideal performances; however, it appears that’s done nothing to shake his resolve, which is something to be respected.

Zach Wilson vows to complicate QB picture

While it’s now clear, that the 2022-23 NFL regular season was a complete disaster for quarterback Zach Wilson, it’s also clear that the young signal caller has not been truly shaken. When we consider the fact that Wilson’s overall play was so bad, that the Jets benched him just 10 games into the season and in the middle of a fight for a playoff spot, credit must be given to Wilson for continuing to keep his confidence. To be clear, the Jets ended outside of playoff contention with a losing record of 7-10, something which Wilson was largely responsible for.

None the less, the quarterback was as defiant as ever when speaking recently about the prospect of the Jets signing a veteran signal caller in the coming offseason. Indeed, it’s all but certain that the Jets will seek to reinforce in the QB department given Wilson’s performances as well as his coming free agency. At any rate, Wilson was singular in his response: “I’m going to make that dude’s life hell in practice every day,” he said.

What do we take from Zach Wilson’s words?

On the one side, Wilson’s comments seem to indicate that he does in fact have a fighting spirit, which is something he was accused of not possessing at times during the campaign. On the other, they do raise an eyebrow when considering that when he was questioned about his role in a Week 11 loss, the signal caller seemed to completely reject the idea that he was responsible in any way. To be clear, Wilson was benched shortly after his comments.

Ultimately, the former second overall pick seems resigned to the idea that he will have to fight for his spot as he prepares to enter his third season in the league. There has of course been no official word on who, if anyone will join the Jets, but there have definitely been a few names linked with the team including Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, Baker Mayfield and even Tom Brady, though where the seven-time Super Bowl champion is concerned, such a move is understandably a little more far-fetched. At this point, we can only wait to see how things turn out for Wilson and his Jets as they prepare for the next NFL season.
