Update:

After a decade with the Detroit Lions, veteran left tackle Taylor Decker is opening up about why his time with the franchise came to an abrupt and frustrating end.

In a recent interview, Decker detailed what he described as a breakdown in communication with the Lions, shedding new light on his earlier decision to request his release.

“It feels like a high school breakup”

When Decker first announced he intended to return for an 11th NFL season, both sides seemed to be on the same page. According to the veteran lineman, it was quite clear that the Lions wanted him back, and that he was not interested in taking a pay cut.

But when discussions resumed weeks later, Decker says he was caught off guard. Instead of picking up where they left off, the team informed his agent that a return would only be possible if he accepted reduced pay, a shift Decker described as unexpected. The conversation ended quickly, with Decker declining before negotiations even reached specific numbers.

“In my weeks since notifying the team of my return there have been numerous discussions, many of which were a surprise to me, and we could not find common ground. Therefore I decided to request my release,” Decker wrote on March 6.

Beyond the contract disagreement, Decker suggested the situation became personal due to what he felt was a lack of communication from team leadership.

After informing the organization of his decision to return, Decker said he spoke with head coach Dan Campbell, but did not receive follow-up communication from general manager Brad Holmes despite attempting to reach out. He described the aftermath of his exit, saying, “It’s been radio silence. It’s uncomfortable. It’s awkward. It feels like a high school breakup.”

More notably, Decker expressed disappointment that no one from team leadership contacted him to acknowledge his decade with the franchise. After 10 seasons, he had hoped for a simple thank you. both to receive one and to give one in return.

Lions’ side of the story

Holmes, speaking earlier in the week, downplayed the idea that anything unexpected occurred. He suggested the only real surprise may have been the timing of Decker’s public announcement about returning for another season, rather than the substance of contract discussions.

From the team’s perspective, there was no major disconnect in expectations, a stark contrast to how Decker experienced the situation. While Holmes left the door slightly open by saying “never say never” about a potential reunion, Decker appears to view the split as final.

Still, he hasn’t completely closed the door on his connection to Detroit. The longtime left tackle has expressed interest in eventually signing a one-day contract so he can officially retire as a Lion. For now, though, the relationship ends on a complicated note.
