Update:

As the Dallas Cowboys begin their third week of training camp, the injury bug hath strucketh. In today’s padded practice, two players were taken to the medical tent within the first 30 minutes - wide receiver Jalen Brooks and running back Royce Freeman.

Fortunately, Brooks was back out there practicing soon after, but Freeman, unfortunately, was not.

What happened to Royce Freeman?

The Cowboys signed veteran Royce Freeman to a one-year, $1.3 million deal as part of their backfield-by-committee approach at the running back position. When Tony Pollard left in the offseason, the Cowboys didn’t exactly replace him. They re-signed former Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott as their RB1 and formed the idea for this approach.

Freeman is expected to play a part in the backfield along with Zeke, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn and is currently listed as third on the depth chart. Freeman played for the Los Angeles Rams last season and ended the year with 319 rushing yards and two touchdowns. In his seven seasons in the NFL, he has 1,792 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, during Monday’s practice, Freeman had to leave after suffering from a groin injury.

A groin injury can be serious, with sprains keeping players out for weeks and tears keeping them out for months. Freeman will still need to undergo some tests before we’re given an update as to how serious the injury is. With a month to go before the regular season, there’s still time for him to heal before it begins, but with the running back depth as slim as it is, this is a concerning injury.
