What Jerry Jones reveals (and doesn’t) in Netflix’s Cowboys docuseries
“America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys”, much like its subject matter, is bound to stir up controversy amongst fans.
Love them or hate them, someone’s always talking about them - the Dallas Cowboys. And they’ll be talking yet again in a week from today, when Netflix’s releases its new docuseries, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys”, which dives deep into the Jerry Jones era of the Dallas Cowboys.
New Jerry Jones docuseries glosses over controversy
Chronicling the franchise from Jones’ 1989 purchase through the 1990s dynasty and ongoing controversies, the series gives an unfiltered look at one of the most polarizing figures in sports ownership. Featuring candid interviews with players, media, and even figures like former President George W. Bush and Phil Knight, the eight-part series explores the soap opera-esque drama behind “America’s Team.”
While the docuseries offers compelling insights - especially into the infamous “White House” era, Michael Irvin’s legal troubles, and the long-running Jerry Jones–Jimmy Johnson feud - it’s garnered criticism for glossing over many of Jones’ personal controversies.
And there were many - from racist comments to sexual escapades and political controversies, Jones always seems to be in the media for something scandalous. And the docuseries skims by these topics with Jones sharing very little.
Still, though the docuseries may disappoint in that manner, its blend of ego, nostalgia, and chaos is sure to both entertain and frustrate Cowboys lovers and haters alike. Netflix will release the eight-part series on Tuesday, August 19.
