What was head coach Robert Saleh’s record with the Jets?

After three years in charge, Robert Saleh has been dismissed as head coach of the New York Jets.

The 45-year-old began coaching at the University of South Florida in 2002 and has gone on to work at six different NFL teams, including a stint as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020.

Saleh was a part of the coaching staff at the Seattle Seahawks when they won Super Bowl XLVII, overseeing the famous ‘Legion of Boom’ defence. In 2021 Saleh signed a five-year deal to become head coach of the Jets but failed to make the playoffs in any of his three full seasons in charge.

The 2024 campaign began with a 2-3 record, most recently losing to the Minnesota Vikings last weekend. Over the course of his time with the Jets, Robert Saleh managed an uninspiring 20-36 record, a win percentage of .357.

When was the last time the Jets made the playoffs?

As his departure suggests, Robert Saleh did not live up to expectations at the Jets. But in his defence, the team has endured a torrid period in recent years and their wait for a second Super Bowl triumph now spans 55 years.

Over the 60-year history of the Jets, formerly known at the Titans of New York, they have only reached the postseason 14 times. Their recent record is particularly bleak, not making the playoffs in any of the past 13 seasons.

Their most recent tilt at playoffs came in 2010 when Rex Ryan’s team made it to the AFC Championship game, eventually falling to a 19-24 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The last time the Jets finished a regular season with a winning record was in 2015 when Todd Bowles led the team to a 10-6 campaign.

Last year the Jets spent big to bring in four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers in the hope that he could lend some much-needed winning experience. Rodgers, now 40 years old, is clearly a win-now investment but the Jets have not yet been able to build a functioning system around the superstar veteran. Whoever is named as the next head coach, getting the best out of Rodger will be the top priority.
