Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady are two of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, and will be going head to head in Week 4′s matchup. Both have led their teams to unlikely wins and comebacks over the years and each team is going into this game 2-1. But what were their college football teams where they honed the skills needed to become the best in the game?

Where did Tom Brady play college football?

Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Junior is the quarterback for Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Now 45 years old, he spent the first 20 seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, where he was a central contributor of the franchise’s dynasty from 2001 to 2019.

Brady is considered by many sports writers and commentators to be the greatest quarterback of all time, although this was certainly not the case in his college days.

Brady, a native of San Mateo, California played his high school ball at Juniper Serra High School and rather than stay in the Golden State, he elected to play his college ball at the University of Michigan from 1995 to 1999.

Redshirted in his freshman year, Brady was the backup until his junior year, and even then he still had to prove himself every week, struggling for playing time. Never fully seen as a starting quarterback in his own right, he finally won the job and promptly set Michigan records for most pass attempts and completions in a single season.

Losing the starting job again in his senior year, he became known as the “Comeback Kid” for the way that he would be inserted into losing games and lead the team to unlikely wins. Despite his struggles, Brady is number three all-time in the Michigan quarterback record books.

Lightly regarded in the NFL draft, he has put his training at University of Michigan to good use. He has won seven Super Bowls, the most by any quarterback in NFL history, five of which he was chosen as the MVP.

Where did Patrick Mahomes play college football?

Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following in his father’s footsteps, who was a pitcher in Major League Baseball, young Patrick started out by playing both college football and college baseball at Texas Tech University. In his sophomore year, he quit baseball to focus solely on football.

Mahomes, 27, was touted highly in the NFL draft, even more so when he clocked the hardest throw ever made at the combine, at 60 mph. Taken by the Chiefs in the first round, he spent his first season as a backup to Alex Smith, but his performance in Week 17, his only start of the season, was enough to convince the team to trade Smith and give Mahomes the starting role in his second season.

That 2018 season would see Mahomes become league MVP and set new NFL records for the most touchdowns thrown in the first two weeks of a season, as well as one for the most thrown by a quarterback in their first three starts.

Mahomes also recorded the most completions and posted the highest quarterback rating of any player in NFL history through his first 25 career starts. He led the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV and was named the MVP as well.
