Update:

NFL Hall of Famer and current Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders is exerting quite a bit of control as his son, Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, gets ready to enter the 2025 NFL Draft this April. The young Sanders is projected to be one of the top picks at his position in the upcoming draft, and his father has vocalized repeatedly that there are certain teams that are off-limits for his son.

“It’s not like who I would like for him to play for. It’s a couple of teams that I won’t allow him to play for,“ said Sanders about his son. ”This is my profession. I know what’s behind the curtain. We ain’t got to get back there for me to understand what’s behind the curtain and what’s not prominent for my son. I’m not doing it.”

Which teams will Deion not allow Shedeur to play for?

Although Sanders did not mention the prohibited NFL teams by name, he did mention his parameters and “rules” for his son as he gets ready to be drafted for the 2025 season.

Hmm, which teams could he possibly mean?

Deion said that the he will not allow Shedeur to play for teams that play in cold weather, have a poor track record of developing young quarterbacks, and that rarely make it to the playoffs. Considering Shadeur is likely to go in the top five picks, he’s not likely to be drafted by a stable team with a good history of quarterback development. He’s been linked over the last few weeks with the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders.

Deion’s criteria would already eliminate the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears. The top two teams to pick in this year’s draft are in fact the Titans and the Browns, followed by the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Shedeur Sanders said he was “happy” with the draft order.

“Whatever happens happens,” he said. “I know at the end of the day God is gonna put me on the right team.”

It definitely seems that Shedeur is a bit more open-minded about his unpredictable NFL future than Deion is. If he is to turn down a team, however, he certainly wouldn’t be the first. John Elway famously refused to play for the Baltimore Colts in 1983 and Eli Manning refused to play for the San Diego Chargers in 2004. It’s understandable that Deion wants to set up Shadeur for a successful career in the NFL, but he risks alienating him from other teams and limiting his possibilities with this approach.
