SUPER BOWL LVIII

Which NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl?

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for a third title in five years but some franchises are still yet to claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

On Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super LVIII, the 58th edition of the NFL championship game.

The Chiefs are looking for their third title in five seasons under the guidance of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who could be on track to equal Tom Brady’s record haul of seven rings. Kansas City could become the latest team to forge an NFL dynasty, following in the footsteps of the Green Bay Packers, the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But away from the rarefied air of this Super Bowl stalwarts, there are countless teams who are yet to taste victory in the six-decade history of the NFL.

There are 12 teams in the NFL who are yet to win a Super Bowl...

Teams without Super Bowl wins

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Detroit Lions
  • Houton Texans
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Tennessee Titans

Of that list, only the Browns, Lions, Jaguars and the Texans have never made it to the Super Bowl.

Which teams have lost the most Super Bowls?

Not winning a Super Bowl is tough; but losing one is even worse. It’s all very well to cruise past your rivals in the regular season and progress through the playoffs, but it all comes down to that final showdown for a shot an immortality.

In the history of the NFL there are five teams who have reached the Super Bowl on multiple occasions but failed to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Here are those unfortunate teams...

Most Super Bowl appearances without winning

  • Buffalo Bills (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993)
  • Minnesota Vikings (1969, 1973, 1974, 1976)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (1981, 1988, 2021)
  • Atlanta Falcons (1998, 2016)
  • Carolina Panthers (2003, 2015)

Of all those success-starved sides, of all the misfortune and misadventure, there is one team that stands out: the Buffalo Bills side of the early 1990s.

For a franchise to play in four Super Bowls without winning is unlucky; to record those Super Bowl heartbreaks in four consecutive seasons starts to look careless. But that is the fate that befell Marv Levy’s Bills side, which came close four times from 1990 to 1993.

But despite the heartbreak, Levy insists that he remains proud that team and grateful for the success that they did bring to Buffalo.

“There’ll always be regret that the Bills didn’t win one, but it’s not something that destroys your outlook on life,” he said. “It was a game. It was an important game. I wish we would’ve won them, but I’m proud we got there. I’m proud we bounced back. I’m proud of the people on our team.”
