The Denver Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett before he finished his rookie season with the team, after an embarrassing 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Hackett goes down in NFL history as the seventh shortest-tenured head coach.

The Broncos are now searching for someone to replace Hackett, who was the 18th coach in the history of the organization. One major consideration for the next person hired is the capacity to work well with quarterback Russell Wilson, with whom Hackett was unable to operate smoothly.

Names in the running

NFL insider Josina Anderson’s sources indicate that there are several names being considered for the position, the most famous of them being Sean Payton, Fox Sports analyst and former head coach of the New Orleans Saints. If the Broncos are serious in their pursuit of him, they would have to buy Payton out of his contract with the Saints. The 58-year-old’s offensive knowhow could help bring out Wilson’s thus-far underutilized talent.

Other candidates include Dan Quinn, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys; Darrell Bevell, who acts as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins; and Shane Steichen, who is the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator.
