Back-up quarterback Brandon Allen says he’s relishing the chance to impress this weekend, as he prepares to start for the San Francisco 49ers in the absence of the team’s first-choice signal caller, Brock Purdy.

Purdy, who has started every game so far this season, has been ruled out of today’s Week 12 clash with the Green Bay Packers, having suffered a shoulder injury in San Francisco’s defeat to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.

“It’s definitely an opportunity for me”

“All year long, we’ve been dealing with injuries here and there,” Allen told reporters on Friday, as he looked ahead to the Packers clash. “It’s been a big next-man-up mentality, so it’s definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game. Obviously we want Brock back and healthy and all that, but for the time being it is an opportunity for me.”

Signed by the 49ers in May 2023, initially as the franchise’s third-choice quarterback, Allen will be making his first start for the Californians. Indeed, it will be the 32-year-old’s first start for any NFL team since the 2021 season, when he was under center for the Cincinnati Bengals’ 21-16 defeat to the Cleveland Browns in Week 18.

What are Brandon Allen’s NFL career stats?

In total, Allen has made nine starts in his nine-year NFL career, which has also brought stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos. The former Arkansas Razorbacks player is 2-7 in the games he has started in the NFL. His most recent victory was a 37-31 win for the Bengals against the Houston Texans in Week 16 of the 2020 campaign.

In 16 career appearances in the US’s elite football league, Allen has thrown for 1,611 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions, with a 56.7% completion rate from 263 attempts. He has an average passer rating of 78.

How much does Brandon Allen earn at the 49ers?

Having penned a one-year contract with the 49ers on his arrival 18 months ago, Allen re-signed with the franchise in March this year, agreeing another season-long deal. Per Spotrac, his current San Francisco agreement is worth $2.02 million, with a $300,000 signing bonus and a guaranteed $700,000.

When will Purdy be back for the 49ers?

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has said Purdy’s return to action is “up in the air” for the moment, after the quarterback’s shoulder responded worse than expected in practice for the Packers clash.

“I don’t want to say there is long term concern,” Shanahan said Friday, per 49ers.com’s Lindsey Pallares. “We got the MRI on Monday, we really just thought he needed some rest. We really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week, but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how [his shoulder] felt. So, we had to shut him down. I really don’t know what to think of it. The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right. But, the way it responded, it really is up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.”
