Justin Houston, the veteran edge rusher, will play a second season with the Baltimore Ravens, who signed him on a one-year deal. Back in May, the Ravens placed an unrestricted free agent tender on Houston, worth $2.3 million or 110% of his 2021 salary, basically ensuring his return to the team. Now, it’s a done deal. The exact terms of the deal are not yet clear, but his return is certain.

Justin Houston, king of sacks

At 33 years old, Houston has been in the NFL 11 years. In that time, he’s recorded 102 sacks, only the 39th player in NFL history to reach 100. He’s also tied for fourth most sacks in the league since his start in the NFL in 2011. He’s also a four-time Pro Bowler and led the NFL in sacks (22) in 2014 when he played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Ravens signed Houston to a one-year deal in 2021, and he finished the season with his lowest amount of sacks on record, just 4.5 in 15 games. However, he led the Ravens with 39 pressures and 17 quarterback hits with 25 hurries. In his career, Houston has recorded a total of 484 tackles, 165 quarterback hits, 18 forced fumbles, 17 fumble recoveries, and four interceptions.

Having Houston on the team was a necessity for the Ravens, as they were running thin on outside linebackers on defense. Tyus Bowser tore his achilles at the end of the season last year and the Ravens tragically lost Jaylon Ferguson when he passed away in June. Houston will compete for time with Odafe Oweh and Calais Campbell
