Who is singing the national anthem at the 2026 Super Bowl?
Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston and the Backstreet Boys are among those who have performed “The Star Spangled Banner” at past Super Bowls.
The performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is a long-standing tradition in American sports and a staple of pre-game ceremonies, from the NFL to the NBA to the MLB. That tradition is, of course, no different at the Super Bowl, the most eagerly anticipated game of the football season and one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
NFL games earlier in the season often give lesser-known local talents the chance to showcase their vocal skills. The Super Bowl, however, is very much about established stars these days.
Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, and the Backstreet Boys are just a few of the artists who have performed the national anthem ahead of kickoff in recent years. Before Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, Charlie Puth will add his name to that star-studded list, though some fans are unimpressed that the NFL didn’t go with a true A-list superstar.
From YouTube covers to Billboard hits
Nevertheless, the 34-year-old from New Jersey has become a prominent name in the music industry since his mainstream breakthrough in 2015. Puth has won awards at the Billboard Music Awards, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and Teen Choice Awards, and has received multiple Grammy nominations.
All three of his studio albums have entered the top 10 on the Billboard 200, and he has enjoyed commercial success with several singles, including his debut duet with Meghan Trainor, “Marvin Gaye,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” which featured Selena Gomez, and “Attention.”
As has become increasingly common in recent years, Puth was first discovered thanks to his YouTube channel, where he mostly posted acoustic covers as a teenager. Within two years, he was signed to the eleveneleven record label, co-founded by Ellen DeGeneres.
Which NFL team does Charlie Puth support?
Puth doesn’t appear to support any NFL team, having previously admitted in an interview that he isn’t a sports fan. “Somehow, I am knee-deep in with the NFL, and I love the ambiance of football,” he said after his involvement in a Super Bowl commercial for Frito-Lay in 2022.
