The first starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, remember that this is after 18 years of Ben Roethlisberger as the team’s franchise QB, appears to be Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky at the Steelers’ wheel

Although no official announcement has been made by head coach Mike Tomlin, the team released the depth chart for the Week 1 of the 2022 season against the Bengals in Cincinnati and Mitchell Trubisky appears as QB1, followed by Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett.

Trubisky joined the Steelers in free agency on a two-year, $14.28 million deal after spending last season as Josh Allen's backup in Buffalo. During the preseason, the 27-year-old threw 34 passes and completed 24 for 283 yards and two touchdowns.

For his part, Rudolph signed a one-year contract extension after his rookie deal expires at the end of the 2020 season. The Oklahoma State product has started 10 games for the Steelers and has completed 236 passes, 16 TDs, 11 INTs and 2,366 yards.

Pickett is Pittsburgh's QB of the future after being drafted with the first round pick in the last Draft. During five years with the Pittsburgh Panthers, the QB played 52 games and generated 12,303 yards with 81 TDs and 32 INTs. In 2021 he was awarded the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and was recognized as the ACC Player of the Year.

‘Big Ben’ supports Trubisky

After retiring from the game, Roethlisberger has started a podcast called Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger and in the last episode he declared that the Steelers starter should be Trubisky because it gives them the opportunity to win right now.

In my opinion, I think Mitchell Trubisky is the starter. He should start. He is a veteran who has been in the league for a while.

“I think he gives you the best chance to win right now,” Roethlisberger said.
