Why did Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens post “free me” on social media?

It would appear that all is not well in Pittsburgh after the Steelers’ pass catcher took to social media to air his frustrations with the team. What next?

Even though his team got the win, it’s now clear that the wide receiver does not see himself remaining with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While there is no official word on if/when he will leave, one has to imagine that after his recent actions, there is no going back.

George Pickens has had enough of the Pittsburgh Steelers

Despite the fact that the Steelers improved to 5-3 after their 20-16 win against the Tennessee Titans, it was not enough to satisfy second-year wide receiver, George Pickens who took to social media where he posted “Free me” on Instagram, before proceeding to remove the Steelers from his profile. It’s worth noting that Picken’s actions follow a performance in the “Thursday Night Football” game during which he caught two passes for a loss of one yard. Given that the 22-year-old has had just three receptions in the last two games, one can imagine that his frustrations are getting the better of him.

Interestingly, Pickens remains en route to surpassing 1,000 receiving yards this season due to the fact that he’s already registered three 100-yard games this season including two consecutive contests against the Ravens and Rams respectively. Yet, it’s got to be said, this is not the first time that Pickens has indicated that he’s not happy with the team. Just last season he was caught on camera shouting “Throw me the f---ing ball” during a win against the Atlanta Falcons. With all of this said, it’s worth noting that Pickens himself has been responsible for several penalties this season, a fact that has brought him some degree of criticism.

So, what happens now between the Steelers & George Pickens?

If we’re honest, nothing. With the league’s trade deadline having just passed, it doesn’t appear that Pickens is going anywhere. Of course, it would have been hard to imagine that with his young age and clear talent, the Steelers would have ever considered offloading him. For the moment the Steelers have said nothing about his post, but one has to assume that head coach Mike Tomlin will address the situation when he holds his weekly press conference on Tuesday. For the moment, all we can do is watch and wait.
