Update:

When the 2026 NFL Draft begins in Pittsburgh later this month, one of the most anticipated moments won’t happen on stage. Projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza is not expected to attend the event in person, choosing instead to experience the biggest night of his football career surrounded by family in Miami.

It’s a decision that may seem surprising on the surface. After all, the draft has become one of the NFL’s most visible, made-for-TV spectacles. But for Mendoza, it makes sense.

Mendoza’s different approach to the spotlight

Mendoza has never followed the traditional pre-draft script. Earlier this offseason, he opted not to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine, instead waiting for his Pro Day to perform with familiar teammates and receivers. That decision showed that Mendoza prioritizes comfort, control, and environment over spectacle. Skipping the draft in person follows that same logic.

Rather than sitting in a crowded green room for hours under national scrutiny, Mendoza is choosing a setting that feels more personal, where the moment can be shared with the people closest to him.

For top prospects, attending the draft isn’t always the glamorous experience it appears to be. Players invited to the event often wait in front of cameras as picks unfold, sometimes longer than expected. For quarterbacks especially, the spotlight can quickly turn into pressure if the draft doesn’t go exactly as projected.

Even for a presumed No. 1 pick, nothing is officially guaranteed until the selection is announced. Avoiding that environment removes uncertainty, and the optics that come with it.

Mendoza isn’t alone in rethinking the draft experience. In recent years, several high-profile prospects have chosen not to attend in person, opting instead for private gatherings with family and friends. The shift reflects how players are increasingly treating the draft as a personal milestone rather than a public performance.

The league may market the event as a celebration, but for players, it’s still a career-defining moment filled with variables outside their control. Choosing where and how to experience it has become part of that control.

Mendoza enters the draft as one of the most accomplished quarterback prospects in recent memory, coming off a historic college career that has made him the clear favorite to go first overall.

But his pre-draft decisions have revealed just as much about him as his on-field performance. He’s deliberate, calculated, and comfortable doing things his own way. And now, on the biggest night of his career, he’s staying consistent with that approach.

Whether it happens on a stage in Pittsburgh or in a living room in Miami, the outcome won’t change. When Mendoza’s name is called, he’ll still be the No. 1 pick. The only difference is where he’ll be sitting when it happens.
