The Houston Texans announced on Saturday that running back Joe Mixon would not be travelling with them to Minnesota to play the Vikings (Sunday September 22, 2024, 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT.) due to an ankle injury.

Mixon suffered an injury early in the third quarter during Houston’s 19-13 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday night.

Mixon calls out NFL for lack of punishment to Edwards

The injury was a controversial one, leading to Mixon calling out the NFL on social media for not enforcing their own rules after what he thought was an illegal hip-drop tackle. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud passed to Mixon, who ran up the sideline before being brought down by Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards using what appeared to be the now-banned swivel hip-drop tackle.

“The NFL and NFLPA made it a rule and an emphasis for a reason,” Mixon wrote on Twitter after the game. “Time to put your money where your mouth is.”

Despite returning to the field he ended up missing practice all week, being marked as doubtful on Friday before the side finally confirmed the worst and downgraded his status.

Who will replace Joe Mixon for the Texans against the Vikings?

The 28-year-old shone on his debut with the Texans in Week 1, running for 159 yards and a touchdown to win AFC Offensive Player of the Week honours. Prior to his move to the Lone Star State, Mixon spent 5 years at the Cincinnati Bengals.

As well as their starting running back, the Texans will also be without backup Dameon Pierce (hamstring) for a second game in a row, meaning that third-in-line Cam Akers is set to start. Curiously, Akers played for the Vikings last year before a season-ending Achilles tendon injury ruled him out in November.

After spending his entire career at the Bengals, Mixon signed a three-year, $27 million contract extension with the Texans in the offseason. The NFL Week 3 clash between the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings will take place at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Sunday September 22, 2024. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT.

In the US, TV viewers will be able to watch the game on CBS, while your streaming options include the online platform fubo, which offers new users a free trial. Enjoy the Texans vs the Vikings on fubo.
