Why isn’t Josh Downs playing for the Colts against the Patriots in week 13? When will he be back?
With the Indianapolis standout receiver sidelined, questions about his recovery and the team’s offense are raised.
The Indianapolis Colts are headed to Foxborough this Sunday, but they’ll be without one of their most reliable weapons. Wide receiver Josh Downs, a standout in his second NFL season, won’t suit up for the game against the New England Patriots. His absence, due to a shoulder injury, leaves a noticeable gap in the Colts' offense. So, what happened, and when can Colts fans expect their top slot receiver back on the field?
Josh Downs’ injury: what we know
Downs sustained the injury late in the Colts’ Week 12 loss to the Detroit Lions. While diving for a pass in the end zone, he tweaked his shoulder but managed to finish the game. Afterward, it became clear something was off. Though the receiver declined to share specifics, his sideline examination pointed to pain near the inside of his shoulder. “It’s fine,” Downs said earlier this week, shrugging off questions about severity. “Just coach’s decision.”
Yet the decision to sit him against New England wasn’t taken lightly. Downs leads the Colts with 53 receptions and four touchdowns, racking up 594 yards this season. His quick routes and sure hands have been critical for an Indianapolis offense still finding its rhythm under head coach Shane Steichen. Missing him in a pivotal AFC matchup isn’t ideal, but the team is playing it safe.
The Colts are taking a cautious approach, labeling Downs as “week-to-week.” With a bye coming in Week 14, the hope is that the extended break will allow him to recover without missing more than one game.
However, it’s worth noting that shoulder injuries, even minor ones, can linger for receivers who rely on upper-body strength for contested catches. Downs previously missed time this season with a high ankle sprain, and the Colts know they need him healthy for the season’s stretch run.
Who will replace Downs for Colts?
The Colts’ receiving corps isn’t at full strength beyond Downs. Ashton Dulin, another wideout, is out with an ankle injury. Alec Pierce, who leads the team in receiving yards, has been dealing with a foot injury but is expected to play. That leaves Michael Pittman Jr, a steady presence this season despite battling a painful back issue, to shoulder the load.
Rookie receiver Adonai Mitchell will likely take on a starter’s role. While Mitchell has shown flashes of potential, with 20 catches for 254 yards this season, he’s also had his share of growing pains. The team may also elevate veterans D.J. Montgomery or Laquon Treadwell from the practice squad to provide depth.
When will Josh Downs return?
Barring setbacks, Downs could be back in action for the Colts’ Week 15 matchup. The team’s conservative handling of his injury suggests they’re aiming to minimize his time away from the field. But as with any injury in the NFL, recovery timelines are fluid. For now, it’s a waiting game.
