Why isn’t Kyler Murray starting for the Cardinals against the Cowboys in MNF Week 9?

Murray, the Arizona Cardinals’ first-choice quarterback, has missed the team’s last two NFL games.

Update:

Jacoby Brissett will once again be the Cardinals’ starting quarterback when they take on the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, as No. 1 signal caller Kyler Murray is not yet fit enough to return to the lineup.

What injury does Murray have?

Murray has missed Arizona’s last two games with a foot injury, and Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon says the 28-year-old is still “not quite there” in his recovery. However, Gannon told reporters on Saturday that the quarterback could yet “have a role” against the Cowboys.

“He’s been pushing”

“Kyler is not going to be ready to start the game, so Jacoby will start,” Gannon said. “Obviously, I feel good about Jacoby. I do want to give it the next couple of days to see if Kyler could possibly have a role on game day.”

Gannon added: “Every player, every injury is unique. He [Murray] has been pushing, we’ve been pushing. He is getting better and he’s had more work this last week. But, like I said, he’s just not ready to go yet […].

“I know he wants to be out there and is doing everything he can. It’s just he’s not quite there yet.”

What are Brissett’s 2025 stats?

Backup QB Brissett has deputized as starter in the two games Murray has missed: a 31-27 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6, followed by a 23-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 7. In his two starts this season, the 32-year-old threw for a total of 599 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Cardinals injury report for Week 9:

  • Out: B.J. Ojulari (knee)
  • Questionable: Kitan Crawford (ankle), Will Johnson (groin), Kyler Murray (foot), Walter Nolen III (calf), Garrett Williams (knee)
