The Dallas Cowboys are having some serious issues in the run game. After letting Tony Pollard go to the Tennessee Titans in free agency and ignoring the running back position during the draft, the Cowboys’ solution was to reunite with Ezekiel Elliott and try out a committee approach. That approach has thus failed them, and they need to make some changes. They are currently dead last in the league in rushing.

Many fans have called on owner Jerry Jones to elevate veteran RB Dalvin Cook from the practice squad. While Cook won’t be the breakout elite back they could desperately use, they really ought to try something.

Cook’s cryptic tweet that’s getting fans excited

Jones chose not to elevate Cook for their game against the New York Giants on Thursday, citing that the week was just too short to do so just yet. Although they improved slightly in their win over the Giants, the run game still needs significant work.

In their Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Cowboys running backs combined for a measly 51 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. In their Week 4 win over the Giants, they combined for 80 yards on 23 carries. Through the first four games, they have combined for just 301 rushing yards and two touchdowns (one of which was scored by quarterback Dak Prescott).

Cook sent out a tweet on X on Tuesday that’s getting fans’ hopes up that this could be the week he plays with the Cowboys.

With a star and praying hands emojis, it could just be a plea, but it seems more likely that the four-time Pro Bowler is grateful for something... perhaps a chance to show the Cowboys what he’s still got left in him.

Despite this and the fact that they are no longer on a short week (in fact, they have extra days to prepare this week), Jones was asked on 105.3 The Fan if he would elevate Cook and he told them, “probably not this week”. So, maybe it’s a plea after all.

The Cowboys can use all the help they can get at running back. They face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Week 5 Sunday Night Football match with an 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff.
