Update:

As the NFL regular season enters its final weekend, the Buffalo Bills find themselves navigating a familiar tension between chasing playoff seeding and protecting the long-term fitness of their franchise quarterback, Josh Allen.

With their regular-season finale against the New York Jets set for January 4 at Highmark Stadium, Allen’s status has become one of the most closely watched storylines as we enter the new year.

Allen, the reigning NFL MVP and the driving force behind Buffalo’s offence, has not practised in full this week due to a lingering right foot injury that first flared up in Week 16 and was subsequently aggravated during the Bills’ narrow loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

“He’s in a better spot than he was last week”

Reports indicate he did not participate in practice on multiple occasions, leaving his availability for Sunday’s game in question.

Head coach Sean McDermott has maintained a cautious but optimistic tone: “I could tell you that he’s in a better spot, according to [team trainer] Nate [Breske] early this week than he was last week. So that’s all I can tell you right now, and we’ll just take a will-see approach as we go through the week here,” he said during the week.

Dr. David Chao of Injury Central, said on the SIC podcast that Allen was “a pickup truck,” adding that “he’s gonna keep rolling. And, you know, as long as the game is meaningful, which I believe it will be this week, depending on seeding, he’s going to play.”

Josh Allen has delivered another strong all-round season for Buffalo, throwing for 3,668 yards at an average of 229.3 yards per game while completing 69.3 per cent of his passes. He has accounted for 25 passing touchdowns against 10 interceptions while adding 579 rushing yards on 112 carries and scoring 14 touchdowns, with an average of 36.2 yards per game as a runner.

The Bills host the New York Jets at Highmark Stadium on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET for their Week 18 clash.
