After losing starting running back Isiah Pacheco to a leg injury, the Chiefs brought back former RB Kareem Hunt to the squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially brought back their former running back Kareem Hunt after it was confirmed that starter Isiah Pacheco was placed on Injured Reserve and would miss between six to eight weeks with a fractured fibula suffered in their Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Will Kareem Hunt start vs Falcons?

In light of Pacheco’s injury, Hunt visited the Chiefs and worked out with them on Tuesday morning and has now been signed to their practice squad. It’s not clear how long he’ll be on the practice squad but he’ll likely find his way into the rotation soon.

The Chiefs will play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3 on Sunday night and they are set to start Carson Steele as the No. 1 running back in Pacheco’s absence while Hunt gets back up to speed with Andy Reid’s offense.

Hunt, who is past his prime, is more likely to serve as the RB2 option while Pacheco is out. He may see a small number of touches on Sunday, but it will be Steele who gets the majority of the work. Steele had seven carries for 24 rushing yards in last week’s win over the Bengals.

Who is Kareem Hunt?

Hunt was originally drafted by the Chiefs in 2017. He actually had an incredible rookie season, running for an NFL-high 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns and earned a Pro Bowl nod. Unfortunately, a video came out later in the season which showed Hunt physically abusing a woman and the Chiefs released him in November 2018. He was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list and did not play the rest of the season. The Cleveland Browns signed him the next year, when he returned to play after an eight-game suspension.

Hunt has spent the last five seasons since then with the Browns. Last year, he ran for 411 yards and nine touchdowns, but became a free agent at the end of the season.
