Quarterback Kyle Murray will stay with the Arizona Cardinals until at least 2023. Arizona has picked up the fifth year option on the 24-year-old’s rookie contract, which will guarantee him a $29.7 million payout in 2023.

It had been a turbulent offseason for Murray and the Cardinals, with the 2019 number one draft pick overall removing traces of the team from his social media accounts.

Murray’s agent Erik Burkhardt then released a statement saying that his client wanted a long-term commitment from the Cardinals, adding that they had already sent a proposed contract to the franchise.

Cardinals: ‘Zero chance’ of trading Murray

After that, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim made it clear that they were not going to trade Murray, while the player declared that he wanted to stay with the team.

With the contract extension, it seems like the two parties have ironed things out, and they now have two more years to agree on a deal for a long-term extension.

The Cardinals’ disappointing 2021 season

Arizona started last season with an excellent 7-0 record but then blemished it by going 4-7 after that.

The Cardinals and Murray have been faltering towards season’s end the past couple of years, losing four out of their last six games in 2020 as well.

Despite last season’s disappointing result, the two-time Pro-Bowler still recorded impressive numbers, throwing for 3.787 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

It was also the first time that the team made the playoffs since 2015.
