The New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, who injured his knee in the preseason, is set to make his first appearance of the 2022 campaign on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday that the 23-year-old has been cleared and “barring any setbacks during the week of practice,” is ready for Sunday.

“It’s really just exciting for him to get back on the football field. It’s been six weeks,” Saleh said. “It is exciting to get him back out there, but at the same time, it’s not all about Zach, it’s making sure that we’re executing on all cylinders like we should every week.”

Wilson was the second pick of the 2021 draft and had a difficult rookie season. He missed time due to his injury last season, and the Jets added receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall to play around Wilson.

Having sustained the injury in the preseason, the young quarterback and the Jets were careful making starting choices, picking Joe Flacco to start three games. New York went 1-2 in those games, with the victory being a surprising comeback in the last two minutes against the Cleveland Browns.

Wilson completed 55.6% of his passes, throwing for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games last season.

While Wilson may have been set back, he’s still a second-year quarterback with immense talent. The Jets will need to figure out what they have with the BYU product, and that process will hopefully start Sunday.
