The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to extend their dominance in the NFL with a win over the Houston Texans in Week 16 of the 2024 season.

Ahead of the game, however, fans have been biting their nails over the fitness of star man Patrick Mahomes, who has kept them all on tenterhooks as he recovers from a physical issue.

What injury does Mahomes have?

Mahomes sustained an ankle injury in their 21-7 Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns. Since then, he has been seen with his ankle heavily bandaged and doubts have emerged over whether or not he will be able to see any on-field action before the new year.

Reports emerged in the aftermath of the win that Mahomes had suffered a “mild high-ankle sprain” and that he was set to undergo a “week-to-week” evaluation on his fitness. Despite the fear, head coach Reid was quick to calm the fluttering heart rates and announced that his quarterback was in fact undergoing “day-to-day” reviews and said that he “probably could’ve gone back in” had the Chiefs not been leading in the game.

‘It’s not broken, it’s just sore'

Scans confirmed that there was no significant damage to the ankle, with Reid clarifying that “it’s not broken, it’s just sore”.

Mahomes, who has passed for 3,348 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions this season, did participate fully at practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday, surprising everyone and showing that his recovery is going smoothly.

This has upped his chances of playing, with Mahomes himself admitting he is keen to get back to action as soon as possible: “You have to [try] to play. That’s the reason you play this game, to push to play. I’m not going to put our team in a bad position.” It seems like it will be a late decision whether or not he actually gets given the green light to participate.

Despite numerous injuries to key figures this season, the Chiefs are 13-1 this season, with a single loss against the Buffalo Bills the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record, and have looked more than a match for the vast majority of sides up and down the country.

But the Texans will be no pushovers. Sitting atop the AFC South, the side led by DeMeco Ryans are 9-5 for the season, with a recent win over the Miami Dolphins the perfect prelude to what is set to be a fascinating clash against two sides.
