Yes, the Bills really engineered the wind out of their new stadium
The premiere of “Hard Knocks” showed how the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium has literally “scienced out” the wind as quarterback Josh Allen got a tour.
HBO’s hit series “Hard Knocks” returned for another season on Tuesday, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the Buffalo Bills as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season. The series also provided a sneak peek into the Bills’ new Highmark Stadium being built in Orchard Park, with some seriously impressive science behind it.
Bills’ new stadium “scienced out” the wind
During the premiere, Bills quarterback Josh Allen got a tour of the team’s under-construction stadium across the street from their longtime home. The new Highmark Stadium includes a canopy that shields fans from harsh weather, but allows snow and rain to hit the field - preserving Buffalo’s iconic game-day elements.
One standout detail? The stadium is specifically engineered to eliminate swirling wind at field level, something that’s plagued kickers and quarterbacks for years. Owner Terry Pegula told Allen that engineers “scienced out” the wind to ensure it won’t affect on-field performance, even when it’s “howling” outside.
“As far as the wind goes, all the science has been done... like we’re protected more on the southwest side, which is is the prevailing wind direction - it comes from that direction,“ Pegula explained. ”And then we have the perforations set up. If we didn’t do that, when the wind went over the stadium, it would get sucked into the stadium and swirl. So we scienced that out.”
Allen also previewed the future locker room and upgraded training facilities which will include a hot tub, cold tub, hydrotherapy, sauna, and steam room - all set to be ready after the team finishes one final season in their current stadium.
