Modern pentathlon gold for Hungary's Gulyas!

Hungary have got their hands on a gold medal! And it's Michelle Gulyas' after she triumphed in the modern pentathlon, setting a new world record score to boot! France's Elodie Clouvel takes the silver, with bronze going to Seungmin Seong from South Korea.

Team USA's Chiles loses bronze medal

Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles will lose her bronze medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise competition, the IOC have confirmed. The American originally finished fifth in the event but was bumped up to third after her coach submitted an inquiry, leading to her score being raised. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled the inquiry was filed after the one-minute deadline, which will now see the original result stand.

Romania's Ana Barbosu will now get the bronze. That's a sore one for Chiles, to say the least.

Sticking with women's basketball, the USWBNT are firm favourites to defeat France on Sunday and claim another gold medal for Team USA. Here's a closer look at their overall record in the Olympics which, I'm sure you'll agree, is absolutely incredible.

Australia lead Belgium in basketball bronze game

It's halftime in the bronze medal match in women's basketball, and Australia are in front...but only just! It's 37-36 to the Aussies midway through the contest, which could quite clearly still go either way.

That's the first time I've had to update the medal table at the top of this feed today, and that water polo bronze extends Team USA's lead in terms of total medals. But does that actually matter? Or is it all about golds? And what happens when teams are tied? So many questions.

Here's a little explainer.

Water polo bronze medal for Team USA!

Team USA has its first medal of the day! And it's come in dramatic fashion in men's water polo! After an 8-8 draw against Hungary, the United States kept their nerve to win a penalty shootout, securing their first water polo medal since 2008!

Serbia take on Croatia for gold a little later.

Team USA's Valente wins women’s omnium scratch race!

Unfortunately for Team USA's Jennifer Valente, winning the omnium scatch race in cycling doesn't mean a medal, but it does mean a strong start to the omnium event, which has three more events to come. She won gold in the event in 2020 (2021), could another one follow?

If you missed yesterday's men's basketball final between Team USA and France (we're fairly sure you didn't), here's how that went down. A pretty close affair across all four quarters, but the United States, inspired by the brilliant Steph Curry, were just too strong.

Team USA going for gold in women's basketball

There have been women's basketball at each of the last 12 Olympic Games (since 1976) and Team USA have won gold medals nine times. One of the times they didn't win was in 1980, when the US led a number of countries in boycotting the Games in Moscow following the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. So, really, they've won nine out of 11. Can they make it 10 out of 12 later today (9.30am ET) in the last event of the Olympics against host nation France? You'd think they would...

Spain win bronze medal in men’s handball!

For the fifth time at the Olympic Games (which feels like a lot), Spain have won the bronze medal in the men's handball tournament! In an incredibly close match against Slovenia, they came out on top 23-22 to finish third.

Germany take on Denmark for gold a little later on today (7:30 ET).

Team USA's Lindwurm finishes 12th

Team USA's Dakotah Lindwurm, who briefly led the race around the halfway point, finishes in 12th place, 3:49 behind winner Hassan. And she looks absolutely delighted with herself, as she should.

Netherlands' Sifan Hassan wins women's marathon!

It's gold for the Netherlands in the women's marathon! The first of the day! And what a finish it was! Five women were in the hunt with just a couple of miles to go, until Sifan Hassan and Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia pulled away right at the end. The two almost bundled each other into the barriers at one point, but they managed to stay on their feet, with the Dutchwoman prevailing in a head-to-head sprint (of sorts), winning with a new Olympic record of 2:22:55.

Bronze goes to Kenya’s Hellen Obiri.

Team USA gold medalist Wilson going back to school

Quincy Wilson was part of United States team that won the gold medal in Saturday's 4x400m relay. But the runner has reminded us all of just how young he is on social media. The 16-year-old, who was born in January 2008, has to go back to school in two-and-a-half weeks! Talk about coming back down to earth with a bang...

Who will win the women's marathon?

It looks as if it's down to five women! Two Ethiopians, two Kenyans and one Dutchman make up the five-woman lead group. Just over 5km to go!

Bad news for Team USA in women's marathon

I hate being the bearer of bad news, Team USA fans, but things have gone south in the women's marathon. Dakotah Lindwurm, who briefly led the race about 20 minutes ago, is now nowhere to be seen at the front. And fellow American Fiona O'Keefe has withdrawn having been limping from almost the very start of the race.

Lindwurm drops off the pace in women's marathon

Apologies if I got your hopes up, Team USA fans. This was the lead Dakotah Lindwurm had a few minutes back. However, she's one of a number of runners that have run into trouble on a massively steep uphill section and has dropped back quite a bit. Maybe she can find a second wind, who knows?

Men's handball bronze medal match underway!

I'll keep you up to speed with how Lindwurm is getting on, but for now, our second event of the day is underway! It's Spain vs Slovenia in the bronze medal match in men's handball. It won't have much of an effect on the medal table, but medals are medals and we need to enjoy every last drop of Olympic goodness!

USA's Dakotah Lindwurm takes women's marathon lead!

No sooner had I posted that last message, than Team USA's Dakotah Lindwurm went off the front of the pack! She has opened up a little gap, although it looks as if she might have some company soon.

Team USA's Lindwurm going strong in women's marathon

Could a gold medal come for Team USA in the women's marathon? Maybe! Dakotah Lindwurm was part of the 15 woman group at the top, looked to have dropped off the pace slightly, but then made her way back into contention. We're a little more than halfway through.

Team USA medal prospects on day 16

If you're wondering where Team USA's gold medals are likely to come from on the final day of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, here's a handy little table put together by Sports Illustrated writer Mitch Goldich. There are some obvious events, such as the women's volleyball and basketball gold medal matches, but could the likes of Kennedy Blades (wrestling) or Jennifer Valente (track cycling) take individual golds to add to the American tally?

High medals-to-event ratio on final day

Unlike previous days at the 2024 Olympic Games, almost every event today is a medal event, as you might've worked out from the full schedule below. There's the odd track cycling quarterfinal and semifinal, which obviously precede the final, thrown in there, along with a 5th/6th water polo men's classification game, which I'm not convinced anyone really cares about (it's Greece vs Spain, in case I'm wrong).

Even if I hadn't mentioned it, the eagled-eyed among you would have spotted that one of those gold medal events/finals is already underway! And it's the women's marathon, which began around 20 minutes ago (at 2am ET, yawn).

That means we should have our first medalists of the final day in around a couple of hours.

Going for gold on Sunday, August 11

On the last day of the Olympics, there's a reduced schedule, with the majority of the action taking place early in the day in Paris (and in the relatively early hours of the morning across much of the United States). Let's hope you've set your alarms!

There are 17 medal events taking place, the first of which is the women's marathon (which has just got underway), while the women's basketball final between Team USA and France (9:30am ET) closes out the action (don't forget about the closing ceremony, though).
