One of the biggest sporting spectacles on the planet is almost underway. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games begin on Friday 26 July when the Olympic flame will illuminate the French capital from the opening ceremony of the event until the event concludes on 11 August.

Thousands of athletes of dozens of different nationalities will parade, for the first time, outside the Olympic stadium - the opening ceremony will be held on the banks of the Seine River. In total, around 10,500 athletes will carry the national shields and flags of their countries, to be exact, 204 nations from around the world. To be precise, 206 teams are officially represented, including teams of refugees and neutral athletes.

How many athletes will compete in the Paris 2024 Games?

Since the Olympic Games held in Atlanta in 1996, the total number of athletes participating in the event has always ranged between 10,000 and 11,500. In fact, Paris 2024 will not be the largest in terms of the overall number of competitors.

The French city will host, specifically, 10,500 athletes, about 900 fewer than those who competed in the Games in Tokyo 2021, the all-time Olympic record. Paris 2024 will in fact be the sixth largest in history in terms of participation.

United States, the country with the most representatives in Paris 2024

As for participating countries, its place on the podium is up for debate. The total number of competing nations amounts to 204, making it the third most represented nation in history. However, the inclusion of refugee athletes and neutral countries takes the total to 206, which would equal the record held by Rio in 2016.

One area where there is no doubt is the country whose delegation will have the greatest number of athletes: the United States. Team USA will have 653 participants in Paris - the largest representation. However, the host country, France, is only just behind the Americans with 622 athletes; Japan completes the podium with a total of 447.
