Team USA’s Xander Schauffele is in a three-way tie for the lead after day two of the men’s Olympic golf tournament, as the 30-year-old attempts to defend the title he won at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Schauffele, the current world No. 2, finished his second round on 11 under par at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, level with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood. Spain’s Jon Rahm is two strokes behind in fourth place, with three players - Belgium’s Thomas Detry, Chinese Taipei’s CT Pan and South Korea’s Tom Kim - tied for fifth place on eight under.

The USA’s three other representatives - Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark - have ground to make up in the final two rounds if they’re to secure a medal. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked men’s golfer, finished day two on six under, in a tie for 10th; Morikawa is two strokes further back, in joint 19th; and Clark is at one over, in joint 46th.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler heads into the weekend in a tie for 10th.ERIK S. LESSEREFE

What’s the prize purse?

There is no official prize purse at the Paris 2024 golf tournament, but national Olympic committees tend to offer their athletes a cash reward for winning a gold medal.

For example, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee is paying all of its team members $37,500 per gold in France, with $22,500 up for grabs for taking silver and $15,000 for claiming bronze.

Success at the Olympics is also worth world-ranking points, and the winner of the tournament receives an exemption for all four major golf tournaments in 2025.
