USA first five
Steve Kerr has been tinkering with his starting five since the very start of the exhibition tour. Jrue Holiday is back in the first five after not playing a single minute against Puerto Rico. Devin Booker gets the start and may have been the other question mark coming into tonight. Joel Embiid, LeBron and Steph make up the other three in Kerr's starting five and Team USA will be hoping to get a better start than they had last game against PR.
What's waiting in the semis
The winner of this game is on to the semifinals and will be a win away from securing a medal at the 2024 Olympics. Obviously that’s not the objective for Team USA who is trying to keep their gold medal streak alive after finishing top of the podium in the last four Olympics. This is the final game of the day, and Germany started off this quarterfinal Tuesday with a win over Greece before Serbia beat Australia and the host nation beat Canada in the game just before this one. That means that the winner of this game will take on Serbia in the semifinals while German and France will play for a spot in the Final. Team USA has already played Serbia twice, once in exhibition play and another time in Group Stages. They beat the Serbians comfortably in both of those games but they will have to get through this game before they can start thinking about Jokic and the Serbians.
Kerr's take on Brazil
Steve Kerr has seen and done just about everything in the game of basketball. He’s won NBA titles as a player, he’s won NBA titles as a coach, he won gold in Tokyo as an assistant to Coach Kyrzewski. It’s safe to say he knows basketball, and he knows that this is not going to be a game that the US are going to breeze by. “They are very physical. I think they’re the No. 1 offensive rebounding team in the tournament. They’ve got a lot of really good shooters and they just play hard” Kerr said to Brian Windhorst in the preview of this game. “They compete play after play, so we’ll have to be ready for their physicality and their shooting, and we need to be on edge and ready for them because they’re not going to back down.”
Star watch: Brazil
Bruno Caboclo is getting all the headlines in Brazil for good reason. He had a monster game that kept his team in the Olympics against Japan but you aren’t going to beat this Team USA side without some of your perimeter guys getting hot. Vitor Benite and Yago Santos have to come up huge for Brazil today in Paris. Benite had 19 points off the bench against Japan and hit 5 of 7 threes and Santos had 18 point and 8 assists in a losing effort against Germany. We have said it before, opponents of Team USA have to be perfect when they play this super team but Brazil has the ingredients to make this a tough game if they come out locked in from the start.
Star watch: USA
Stating the obvious at this juncture would be a bit pointless. We have all seen Team USA play by now. We know. They are a loaded team deep with NBA stars from their No. 1 player to their No. 12 player. If there is one person I can say I’m surprised with so far for their lack of impact on this team, it would be Steph Curry. He’s averaging just 7 points a game, and had his worst game against South Sudan, going 1/9 from the field and scoring just 3 points. The Steph we have come to know would have bounced back and dropped 30+ in the next game, but against Puerto Rico he had just 8 points on 3/8 shooting. Steph knows there are plenty of stars to carry this team, so if it’s not his night, he can pass the ball off and Team USA will be just fine, but tonight is going to be his night.
Last game: Brazil
The Brazilians faced a do-or-die match up against Japan knowing that even a win may not have been enough. They were going to need a win and win by a lot to ensure they had a shot at one of the last quarterfinal spots. They jumped out to an early double digit lead in the first quarter thanks to a sensational game from Bruno Caboclo who had 33 points and 18 rebounds, but Japan would battle back and cut the lead to four heading into the fourth quarter. Brazil came up clutch under pressure and made sure that the not only won the game but they blew Japan out by 18 which allowed them to capture the third spot in the group and the final place in the quarterfinals.
Last Game: USA
It’s nothing new for the United States to get off to a slow start. It may not be so much a case of Team USA dragging out of the gate as it is their opponents rising to the challenge. That was the case with Jose Alvarado and Puerto Rico on Saturday. Alvarado scored 13 first half points and had his team leading after the first 10 minutes, but then Anthony Edwards came off the bench and took control of the game. He scored 26 points on 11/15 field goals as the US took the lead in the second quarter and stretched it to a 30 point lead by the end of the third quarter. Team USA rolled to the win and ended the group stages with an average margin of victory of 21.3 ppg.
We are live from Paris
Hello everyone and welcome to Paris where Team USA arrives after dominating the Group Stages in Lille. They took on a Serbia Team in the first game and blew out one of the favorites to dethrone the Americans. Then they got their revenge against a South Sudan team that gave them a scare in the pre-Olympic exhibition tour before blowing out Puerto Rico on Saturday. Brazil had a more complicated journey to the quarter, losing to France and Germany before beating Japan in the final group stage game. They got into quarterfinals by being one of the two best third place teams after three group games, but now David will have to knock off Goliath if they want a chance at a medal in Olympic basketball.
