But when Mahmoud Saber fired home with just 30 minutes left in the second half, it was clear that this could be a disappointing night for the home team.

Fast-forward via an 83rd-minute equaliser from Jean-Philippe Mateta, an early extra-time red card for Egypt’s Fayed Omar, and two further French goals, Mateta again before Michael Olise, and our Olympic hosts were into the gold medal game.

The gold medal match, France vs Spain, takes place on Friday, August 9, at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time, (12 noon ET). This game will be the 32nd in the competition, and the day before will see Egypt and Morocco battle it out for the bronze medal.
