Why is Team USA the penultimate country in the Paris Olympics Parade of Nations?

While most teams will parade in alphabetical order at today’s Paris 2024 opening ceremony, the United States will be among the exceptions to that rule.

Gauff, LeBron to lead US out as second-last team

Led by flag bearers Coco Gauff and LeBron James, the USA will be the second-last team to join the Parade of Nations, which this year won’t be taking place inside a stadium. In a Summer Olympics first, athletes will travel in boats along Paris’ river Seine, following a six-kilometre course to the Jardins du Trocádero, where the opening ceremony will come to a climax.

Under normal circumstances, Team USA would be in the mid-60s in today’s order of appearance. The Olympic parade follows the alphabetical order of countries’ names in the language of the host nation - and in French, the US is known as “États-Unis”. That would place the States between Eswatini and Ethiopia (“Eswatini” and “Éthiopie” in French).

So why are Team USA at the back of the parade?

According to Olympic tradition, however, the Games’ current and future host nations are the final teams to go out, in reverse chronological order. As 2024 hosts, France will be the last country to take to the Seine - and as the 2028 Summer Olympics are to be held in Los Angeles, the US will be the penultimate team in the Parade of Nations. The 2032 Games have been awarded to Brisbane, so Australia will be the third-last team to go out.

Are there any other exceptions in the parade order?

Yes: given its status as the birthplace of the Olympics, Greece will lead the parade. The Greeks will be followed by the Refugee Olympic Team, before countries begin emerging in alphabetical order. It should also be noted that Russian and Belarusian athletes, while allowed to compete at the Games as neutrals, will not take part in the Parade of Nations.

When is the Paris 2024 opening ceremony?

The Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony is to take place today, Friday July 26, 2024. It’s scheduled to start at 1:30pm ET/10:30am PT.

Viewers in the US will be able to watch the event on NBC, Telemundo and Peacock.

English-language coverage will begin on NBC and Peacock at 12 noon ET/9am PT, while Telemundo’s Spanish-language broadcast will get going at 1pm ET/10am PT.
