2022 Presidents Cup: Who are the automatic qualifiers for the International and US teams?

The top ranked golfers for both the US and the International teams have already secured their spot in this year’s Presidents Cup.

As the PGA Tour season is finishing up with the FedExCup Playoffs, the Presidents Cup rosters are already getting shaped ahead of next month’s tournament in North Carolina. The two teams will comprise twelve of the best players of their regions, but the selections work under different criteria. The US Team splits up the golfers qualified by ranking and gives the team captain, Davis Love III, six selections for himself. The International team brings eight players selected by ranking while keeping four spots for captain Trevor Immelman choices.

The rankings were determined upon the conclusion of the BMW Championship this past weekend, while the Captains’ choices will be announced on September 6 for the International team and September 7 for the US team. These are the golfers already qualified for the event in each team:

US Team

  • Scottie Scheffler. The number one golfer in the world, who might crown himself as the FedExCup champion this week, will lead the US team in his first ever Presidents Cup appeareance.
  • Patrick Cantlay. The current FedExCup champion and contender for another win, Cantlay already played in the 2019 Presidents Cup as well as the 2021 Ryder Cup.

  • Xaunder Schauffele. He won a couple of tournaments this year and will play alongside Cantlay once again, which should help the US team.
  • Sam Burns. Three wins this year got him to qualify after being left out of the 2021 Ryder Cup’s team.
  • Justin Thomas. He won a major, the PGA Championship, in the same course where this Presidents Cup will be played.
  • Tony Finau. A strong season finish allowed him to qualify via ranking for his second appearance in the event.

International Team

  • Cameron Smith. The latest major winner, Smith is playing better than ever amid rumors of his move to LIV Golf.

  • Hideki Matsuyama. A veteran for whom this will be his fifth Presidents Cup (and who was also offered $400 million by LIV).
  • Sungjae Im. He will play in his second Presidents Cup at age 24.
  • Joaquin Niemann. He comes off a solid season which will hopefully mean a better participation than his 2019 one.
  • Joohyung Kim. At age 20, Kim will try and show the golf that allowed him to qualify this year.
  • Corey Conners. A consistent player who will make his tournament debut at age 30.
  • Adam Scott. The most experienced player in the team, he brings a 16-22-6 record entering his 10th Presidents Cup.
  • Mito Pereira. Another rookie whose potential will be tested in this Presidents Cup.

The 2022 Presidents Cup will take place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the week of September 20-25.
