The 126th U.S. Open is underway this week on Long Island. Can anyone catch Wyndham Clark? Players will have to bring their A-game at Shinnecock this weekend.

Membership has its privileges: How much it costs to be a member at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

It’s going to be a battle and players are expected to struggle physically and mentally at Shinnecock Hills. This is the sixth time the U.S. Open has been played here. Last time, in 2018, Brooks Koepka won with a total score of 1-over par. It will be a test on Saturday and Sunday as the field is trying to catch Wyndham Clark.
Watching the coverage this week and admiring the setup at Shinnecock Hills, we all wonder who are the lucky ones who get to play this course regularly. Information about members and membership fees is hard to come by, but we’ll try to give you a ballpark figure of what the lucky 300 or so members pay to have the privilege to play at one of the oldest courses in the U.S.

How much do members pay to play?
As you can imagine, the information about initiation fees and yearly dues isn’t published on the Shinnecock Hills website. We’ve done a bit of research and come up with a figure that is probably close to what new members have to pay to become members. Forbes magazine reports that initiation fees are somewhere around $250,000. Monthly fees are reported to be somewhere in the ballpark of $1,250.
As is the case at Augusta National and other exclusive private golf clubs, it’s not only about the money. Not anyone can become a member at Shinnecock Hills and with only 300 or so members, new openings are not very common. Reports also claim that to play the course, you need to be invited by a member and be ready to pay around $350 for the privilege.
