South African Daniel Fichardt took full advantage of the lack of wind in Kingsbarns (Scotland) on Thursday to complete a solid card of 61 (eleven under par) on the first day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with Jon Rahm continued the good golf of recent weeks with the Spaniard completing a round of 65 strokes in Carnoustie.
The first day of this tournament was a good day for Rahm as he lies four strokes behind Fichardt, who leads the way at this unusual tournament, which also brings together sports and cultural stars such as Gareth Bale, Ruud Gullit, Michael Douglas, and is played on three different courses.
The 168 players, accompanied by an amateur and in some cases high profile media stars, played one one of the three St. Andrews courses this Thursday before moving to a different course this Friday.
Rahm, with his -7, was the best at Carnoustie, while Fichardt was the leader in Kingsbarns in the overall standings with Australian Daniel Hillier finishing the best at Saint Andrews, with his 63 strokes (nine under par).
Rahm moves to Kingsbarns
The Basque player, who will play this Friday at Kingsbarns, the most difficult of three courses should the wind pick up, finished eighth, tied at four strokes behind the leader in the overall standings, while two strokes behind Rahm were the next three Spaniards, Jorge Campillo from Cáceres, who closed the Kingsbarns round in 67 strokes (five under par), and Adrián Otaegui and Adri Arnaus from San Sebastian, with the same strokes, but at Saint Andrews.
Meanwhile, the big favorites for the tournament lost out on the leaderboard on this first day in which only Britain’s Tyrrell Hatton, a two-time winner of this event, matched Rahm on the same course, while Britain’s Matt Fitzpatrick finished -5 and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy finished with a -3 at Carnoustie.
In teams, Britain’s Andrew Wilson and amateur Tom Leonard lead the table with -15, tied with India’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Linkin Park bassist Dave Farrell, while Welshman Gareth Bale is just two strokes behind the leaders, being the ‘amateur’, accompanied by Britain’s Daniel Brown.
