The Kapalua resort, owned by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company, is a magnificent island retreat on 22,000 acres (89 km2) of land. The resort is nestled between the verdant mountain ridges, the summit of Puʻu Kukui, and lava rock bays, providing a picturesque backdrop for a memorable vacation experience.

The resort offers many exciting activities for visitors, including easy access to three different beaches, Kapalua Adventures zipline tours and activities, and two nature preserves. The resort also features the 5-acre (20,000 m2) Kapalua Spa, where guests can enjoy various rejuvenating treatments. Additionally, there are multiple restaurants and shops to explore, and the historic Honolua Store that offers a glimpse into the area’s rich history.

For golf enthusiasts, Kapalua Resort is a golfer’s paradise, with two championship golf courses recognized as some of the best in the world. The Bay Course and The Plantation Course are used on the PGA and LPGA, with the latter serving as the official course during the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The Plantation Course is known for its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the West Maui Mountains, making it a favorite among golfers.

The sensation of teeing off into the morning sun at Kapalua is a sight to behold. The resort offers an exceptional golfing experience, with world-class amenities, breathtaking views, and challenging courses that cater to golfers of all skill levels. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to improve your game, Kapalua Resort is the perfect destination for an unforgettable golf vacation.

The Bay Course

The Kapalua Bay Course is a championship golf course that is both difficult and stunning. It opened its doors in 1975 and has hosted more than 20 major professional tournaments, the highest number for any neighboring island course in Hawaii. From the first televised event in golf during the 1983 Kapalua International to the Kapalua LPGA classic held 25 years later, The Bay Course has consistently tested the best golf players while keeping up with the latest technology.

The Plantation Course

The Plantation Course is an exceptional golf course located on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains. It was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, two of the world’s most respected golf course architects. The course offers sweeping ocean views from almost every hole, providing golfers a breathtaking experience.

The course layout is a lengthy 7,596-yard par 73, making it challenging for professional golfers. However, the wide fairways and generous greens make it very playable for amateur golfers. The course has been designed to take advantage of the natural terrain, with dramatic elevation changes and various hazards that add to the challenge.

One of the most exciting features of the course is the downhill tee shots that provide golfers with a thrilling experience. The 18th fairway is particularly noteworthy for its aggressive slope that allows you to hit one of the longest drives of your life. It’s an incredible feeling that makes you feel like a pro.

The Plantation Course is the site of the PGA Tour’s The Sentry tournament, held each January. The tournament features an elite field of previous year’s PGA TOUR winners, including some of the greatest golfers ever. Over the years, the field has included golf legends such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and Davis Love III.

The course record is currently set at 61, tied between Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, and Matt Jones from the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions. It’s an impressive feat highlighting the skill required to play the course at such a high level. Overall, the Plantation Course is a world-class golf course that offers golfers an unforgettable experience.

The Kapalua Resort fees

The Plantation Course has significantly improved since Coore and Crenshaw gave it a facelift before the 2020 event. They re-turfed the course, meaning the grass was replaced and now provides a more vibrant and lush playing surface. Additionally, they rebuilt all the greens and bunkers, which has made the course more challenging and exciting for players. Furthermore, they added tee boxes and enlarged some of the putting surfaces, which added more variety to the course.

The best thing about this tropical gem is its accessibility to the public. While you enjoy the action from the all-star tournament over the next few days, remember that you can taste The Plantation Course by playing it yourself. It doesn’t rank as the 40th on GOLF’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play for nothing.

If you’re interested in playing The Plantation Course, it costs $395 (plus tax) per person, which includes a shared cart fee. However, if you stay at Kapalua Resort, the price drops to $365 per person. The Bay Course at Kapalua is another option at the resort, costing $235 for standard or $215 for resort guests. It’s an excellent option for those looking to experience a world-class golf course at a more affordable price point. For more information on rates, please click here.
