Update:

J.J. Spaun leads the U.S. Open ahead of round two at Oakmont Country Club, after a number of major names struggled on day one.

The American shot a four-under round of 66 on Thursday, to finish the first round one stroke ahead of South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence. Spaun’s score tied the record for the lowest opening-round total in the history of U.S. Opens at Oakmont.

One shot behind Lawrence, there is a three-man chasing pack comprising Si Woo Kim, Sugjae Im and two-time U.S. open champion Brooks Koepka.

How did Scheffler and McIlroy fare on day one of the U.S. Open?

Thursday proved a less successful day for the two major winners so far in 2025, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Scheffler is in a tie for 49th after carding three over in Pennsylvania, while McIlroy is one shot further back.

The defending champion, Bryson DeChambeau, is also well down the field after round one: the 31-year-old, who pipped McIlroy to the U.S. Open title in 2024, is one of 12 players who are level with Scheffler, after scoring 73.
