Update:

The 2025 US Open is only just getting underway and already we’ve seen one of the most incredible shots of this, or any other year.

Patrick Reed became only the fourth golfer to make a double eagle, also known as an albatross, since officials started keeping full records in 1983.

The 34-year-old was 286 yards from the flag as he lined up his second shot on the par-5 fourth hole at Oakmont. He hit a fairway wood onto the green but was unable to see as the ball disappeared over the brow of a bank.

After a few moments, Reed heard a cheer from the green and realized that he had made history with one of the rarest shots in golf. ESPN reports that only a few hundred are made around the world each year, while there may be more than 30,000 holes-in-one.

Doing so at the US Open, one of the sport’s four major championships, makes it all the more incredible. In fact, Reeds becomes only the fourth player to shoot an albatross at the US Open, joining T.C. Chen (1985 at Oakland Hills), Shaun Micheel (2010 at Pebble Beach) and Nick Watney (2012 at Olympic).

Reed is currently placed No. 59 in the PGA Tour world rankings but he comes into the tournament with an outside chance of challenging for the title. He won the Masters Tournament in 2018, to date his only major championship triumph.

However he also finished tied-second in the 2017 PGA Championship and managed a fourth-placed finish at the US Open in 2018. It certainly looks like his luck is ‘in’ at the moment.
