Alcaraz defends the Barcelona Open title after beating Tsitsipas

The young Spanish star won the ninth title of his career after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in two sets in the Trofeo Conde de Godó final.

Carlos Alcaraz was the main favorite to win the Barcelona Open title and he confirmed that status by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final (6-3, 6-4).

The World No. 2, who hasn’t lost a set in this season’s tournament, broke the Greek three times to emerge victorious and improved his head-to-head record to 4-0 against Tsitsipas.

Carlitos has now won nine ATP titles so far, but it’s the first time he managed to defend the title.

“It is incredible. To feel this energy and lift the trophy in Barcelona in front of my family and friends… and most members of my team are here as well. Playing at this level and lifting the trophy in front of them is a good feeling for me”, Alcaraz said after the game.

“Me and my team were talking before the match about staying relaxed. Staying relaxed is the most important part for me, to forget the mistakes, everything, and be myself on the court”, he added.

Next stop, Madrid

After succeeding in Barcelona, Alcaraz will try to repeat his performance in Madrid, where the fourth Masters 1000 of the season will take place.

The Murcia native will also defend the title in the Spanish capital, as he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final (6-3, 6-1).

Without Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, both trying to recover from their injuries, Alcaraz will be the fans’ favorite again playing in Spain, although players like Jannik Sinner, Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, or Tsitsipas himself will be among the favorites to the title too.

The current US Open champion is in red-hot form, as he has won 23 games and only lost two, and will be looking to go all the way in Madrid too to get to Roland Garros in the best condition.
