Alcaraz puts an end to the Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray Wimbledon dominance
The Spanish tennis star becomes the first player outside the Big Four to be seeded top for Wimbledon since 2003.
Carlos Alcaraz continues to make tennis history even before Wimbledon 2023 begins. The biggest event of the season on grass, some would say the greatest of all tennis tournaments, sees the Spaniard named first seed in the men’s draw, something we haven’t seen for two decades.
Alcaraz tops Wimbledon seedings
As Wimbledon officials announced that Alcaraz would be the top seed in the tournament, it confirmed the news that he had broken the dominance of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Alcaraz is the first tennis player outside that ‘Big Four’ to be the first seed since 2003, as the Grand Slam social media account was quick to point out.
The 20-year old from Murcia is seen as the main obstacle for Djokovic to overcome as the Serb attempts to win his eighth crown in London, which would equal Federer’s record in the list of winners there. It would also see him recover the world’s number one spot from Alcaraz.
Lots at stake, and we can’t wait. Strawberries and cream at the ready...
