Alonso: “Newey knows his design will be the best”
"That makes me feel very confident," the Spaniard said in an interview with Maaden, Aston Martin's senior partner. He added: "We won't be happy until we win."

In a candid new interview with Ma’aden—the Saudi Arabian mining and metals company that serves as a key partner of Aston Martin—two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso lays bare his mindset, motivations, and hopes for what may be his final shot at glory.
Aston Martin: The Final Chapter
“I’m driven by personal challenges—trying to win again in Formula 1, and the Aston Martin project,” Alonso begins, in a brief teaser given to AS USA with the full interview set for publication Thursday.
Alonso speaks with conviction about the hunger within the team at Silverstone: “We all want to prove something—that we can win again.” He adds, “I carry a huge responsibility being part of such an incredible organization. This is where I want to be for what may be my last opportunity in F1.”

He’s not just asking for commitment—he’s leading by example. “I expect everyone to give 100%, and I’m the first who has to set the tone. That means putting in the hours, staying motivated all season, and delivering results whenever possible.”
It’s no secret that 2025 hasn’t gone according to plan for Alonso or Aston Martin. But he remains optimistic, crediting recent changes within the team for reigniting belief. “The new faces have helped reset expectations and motivation. If you don’t see change when things aren’t working, that’s when you lose confidence. But I’ve found a team and leadership at Aston Martin that won’t be satisfied until we’re winning.”

Adrian Newey: The game-changer
Much of that hope centers around legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey, who Alonso calls “the greatest designer in the sport’s history—no question.”
He continues, “Maybe no one will ever match his numbers. He sees the car as a single, unified piece. It’s like he’s always in control. His self-confidence is unlike anything I’ve seen. He’s not fazed by other teams, philosophies, or designs—he believes his will be the best. That gives me a lot of confidence.”
Winners’ mindset
Alonso sees himself and Newey as kindred spirits. “When we’re motivated, we’re obsessed—with winning.” He explains, “When I show up to a race, I believe I’m the most prepared. I know our limitations and our pace, but I’m full of optimism, confidence, and determination to get the best result. Sometimes that’s seventh, sometimes ninth, sometimes a podium. But if a podium is within reach, I’m not settling for eighth—no way.”
Looking back on a career filled with triumphs and missed opportunities, Alonso has no regrets. “If I changed anything, maybe I wouldn’t be here or be who I am. Sure, if you could go back and pick different teams, maybe I’d have more titles. But I’m happy. Every decision, every mistake, every success—they all happened for a reason.”
